House Arrest

[01 Nov 2005 | Tuesday]

Current mood: cranky

Well, I'm nearly 22 going on about 15...according to my parents, who felt the need to put both me and my 13 yr old brother under house arrest last weekend, for disobeying their orders *not* to go across the street to Blockbuster to rent a scary movie last Friday night.

OK so here's how it went:

Katie sighed with contentment, the first time she had felt somewhat relaxed in ages. She was prepared to have a relaxing evening, with her parents out to eat and her younger brother at a friend’s house. She had just sat down at the computer to load a CD and was preparing to start her homework when there was a loud knock on the door. She figured it was her mom, back already after forgetting something, but it was her little brother instead, who had come home from the birthday party early to spend time with his sister and watch a scary movie together. And that was the beginning of the bad weekend that soon followed. After calling to find out if she and Will could walk over to Blockbuster (right across the street) and rent a scary movie, Katie and Will decided they would go against their parents’ wishes and go anyway. Thinking that there wouldn’t be a problem, they tried to be quick but it would appear that their mother had thought ahead and had pulled up in the parking lot and upon seeing them, ordered them to get into the car.

So both Will and Katie were put under house arrest for the remainder of the weekend. Katie thought this was kind of funny, but she didn’t dare laugh in case her parents or Will saw her and increase the level of trouble. Both of them were sent up to their respective rooms, and told to do their homework or go to bed. Will, who was in the worse mood of the two, opted for the latter, while Katie took the former. However, the only part of her homework she could complete in her room was the reading assignment for her Creative Writing class.

Katie lay in bed that night, thinking of the things that wouldn’t get done now that they’d been caught. There would be no going to the mall on Saturday to look for a late Halloween costume. There definitely wouldn’t be any going to the Fox & Hound bar to get any drinks after the mall, since they were on the same side of town. No Halloween parties to go to Saturday night, which was fine anyway, as she knew her parents would never let her go alone, and Ashley hadn’t called her back about getting together this weekend. Katie was a bit sorry she’d even picked up a copy of the Creative Loafing newspaper on her way out of Manifest, her favourite music store, earlier in the day. ‘At least I got to go to Manifest this weekend,’ she thought. Not only had she managed to find some cool CDs, she also managed to find and make a friend, who shared her love of UK drum n bass and jungle music but also her desire to move to England one day. She even got his number too! So that was the first good thing that had happened this weekend, and Katie had a feeling that it would be the only good thing that would happen. She decided then and there that she wouldn’t be coming home for Thanksgiving.
